FIFTH GRADE SERVICE LEARNING
Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. GLO is involved with ongoing Service Learning Project partnerships with CUESA, the San Francisco Food Bank, and RECOLOGY Sunset Scavenger, to name a few.
STAFF DIVERSITY
GLO@AFY strives to provide the children with rich experiences by hiring both females and males of all cultural ethnicities. Each GLO Staff has a different unique offering to the youth at GLO.
Community Connections
AFY MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS - GLO offers an opportunity for Alice Fong Yu Middle
School Students to acquire Community Service hours for graduation. They assist with snack preparation, Kids Clubs activities, and Special Events. They are also responsible role models for the younger children.
MYEEP - The Mayors Youth Employment & Education Program (MYEEP) provides subsidized employment opportunities for High School youth. MYEEP youth help GLO children with homework, Group Days, and give individualized attention to some students.
Daily Schedule of Learning & Activities
CHOICE TIME
Is an opportunity for children of different ages to participate in fun, exciting and educational activities. The GLO@AFY staff plan creative and age-appropriate activities that strengthen children’s social skills and support positive decision making. CHOICES such as Science, Art, Group Game, Neighborhood Walk, Relax Time, Gardening, and Cooking are offered during Choice Time.
GROUP DAY
Is a chance for students to interact in a safe, respectful and non-competitive environment with their same age peers. During Group Day, children participate in team building games, social skill building, cultural celebrations, and special event preparation. By engaging in Group Day activities, students learn important social responsibility concepts such as conflict resolution, living a healthy lifestyle, team building, and cultural awareness. Monthly themes connected to school day learning are also incorporated into Group Day planning.
KIDS CLUBs
Are original project based enrichment activities created by GLO staff. Kids Clubs such as Jewelry Fun, Make a Movie, Comic Strip Creations, Japanese Journey, Volleyball, Scooby Doo Mystery Club, Trivia Quest, Game Shows, are just a few of the great activities GLO offers. Kids Clubs make learning fun!
HEALTHY SNACK
GLO@AFY provides children with a nutritional snack every day. Our snack consists of a bread/cracker, fruit/vegetable, a protein and a choice of milk, juice or water. Children involved in the snack preparation process learn about serving size, composting, and recycling.
