GLO is proud to have one of the most diverse and supportive programs in San Francisco. The organization's longevity and success would not be possible without the passion of our innovative and enthusiastic staff, the active participation of our board of directors, and the creative collaboration of our community partners. GLO's reputation as a high quality after school enrichment program helps the organization attract the best and brightest staff and supporters.
Simon Lee, Executive Director
Simon has been working at GLO, a non-profit direct service after-school organization in San Francisco, since 1990 as a line staff person and Site Director. Simon has a Master's in Education and a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from San Francisco State University, and now teaches part-time at City College of San Francisco and SF State University. Simon was CalSAC's Leadership Fellow for the Trainer network and is past recipient of San Francisco's Week of the Young Child Provider of the Year award. In his spare time, he likes to listen to his ipod, run, and play basketball.
Richard Gunn,
Treasurer
Rich is a tax partner with Burr, Pilger & Mayer, LLP (www.bpmllp.com), a full-service CPA firm serving the Bay Area. He has over twenty years of experience with a focus on OMBs (owner-managed businesses), and is a CPA licensed in New York & California. His experience includes tax planning & compliance for the business and its owners.
Rich served as past president of the San Francisco Small Business Network where his accomplishments included doubling membership, creating & publishing their first newsletter, BusinessLine, and business representative for the Mayor’s Summit on Children, Youth & Families, and he has served as co-chair of the JOBS for Youth summer youth-employment campaign.
Rich was born in Brooklyn (and proud of it) and he currently lives in San Francisco. He is the faer of two and husband of one, and his children attend public school in San Francisco. Rich spent 16 year living in the Antarctic (in his previous life as a penguin).
Karen Lam,
Community Member
Karen Lam is the Director of Kai Ming Head Start Program in San Francisco. Under her leadership, Kai Ming opened new centers in the Richmond and Sunset Districts of San Francisco to serve low-income families with children 3 to 5 years old. Ms. Lam was the Board President of Wah Mei Preschool for seven years. She was previously a Director at Self-Help for the Elderly, where she established their senior centers in Palo Alto, San Mateo, South San Francisco and Santa Clara. Ms. Lam’s career has been dedicated to serving the very young and the very old. Ms. Lam is well represented by her three children who attend Alice Fong Yu Alternative School. She and her husband are active volunteers in many school events and have been long-time contributors to marriage preparation retreats throughout the San Francisco Archdiocese. Ms. Lam earned her Masters of Social Work with a certificate in gerontology from the University of Michigan and her Bachelors degree from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Helen Doyle,
Community Member
Helen currently works at Stanford University directing an interdisciplinary graduate program in Environment and Resources, which brings faculty and students together to find new solutions to pressing environmental problems. In addition to education, Helen has also worked at a foundation and in the non-profit sector, where she gained fundraising experience. She went to college and graduate school in New York City and lived in Germany for two years before coming to San Francisco. Her two sons have attended GLO throughout elementary school, which has been a fantastic experience for them, and she is also active with their public school.
Phyllis Wong,
Community Member
Phyllis Wong, a native San Franciscan and graduate of San Francisco State University, has worked in the banking industry for over 30 years. Currently with Wells Fargo Bank, Phyllis has worked in the Community Lending Division financing the construction, renovation and acquisition of affordable and senior housing in California; and presently works in the Merchant Banking Division, which offers preferred equity and mezzanine financing.
Phyllis attends Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school for a number of years. Her two school age children have attended GLO’s summer programs and gained positive experiences from it. An active volunteer, Phyllis spent ten years on the finance and volunteer committees of Self Help for the Elderly; and has volunteered for numerous local agencies including Haight Ashbury Clinic, Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation, Big Brother-Big Sisters and Chinatown Community Development Center.
Raised as a “latch key kid”, her interest in GLO stems from her experiences in teaching and concern for the availability of affordable, effective and quality before-and-after school care for children of working parents.
