GLO Summer Adventures

Welcome to GSA!

What’s new for 2017?

We are taking GSA 2017 to the “Tech Extreme” this summer. We are taking a deep dive into all things technology by bringing in Code Fu while infusing our own curriculum and enrichment classes. We are also keeping some of the traditional camp programming that the children love but we will connect it back to the world of technology.

Code Fu is a school day and after school enrichment and consulting program designed by teachers and software engineers to provide students in K – 8th with the option to learn Computer Science in the safety and comfort of their schools. We are excited to be working with them this summer.

Program Themes and Schedule

Each two weeks we will explore a different media of technology leading up to week  7 which will be culmination of all previous 6 weeks.

Weeks 1 & 2 – Engineering (‘Code Fu’ Dojo Mon & Tue)
K – 2nd: Students will be introduced to loops, functions, variables and more by creating games with the award winning, coding language, ‘Scratch Jr’.

3rd – 5th: Students will be learning the fundamentals of Coding/Computer Science by creating mini games with the award winning, block-based language, ‘Scratch’.  They will then follow up by learning the language of javascript (.js) by creating a few mini apps using ‘Bitsbox’.

Weeks 3 & 4 – Robotics (‘Code Fu’ Dojo Mon & Tue)

K – 2nd: Students will be using the robot & coding language, ‘Cubetto’ & ‘Robot Mouse’ to continue their exploration of the coding fundamentals of loops, functions, variables, and commands.

3rd – 5th: Students will be coding the robots, ‘Dot & Dash’ to turn, speak, launch, and more!  They will be creating an obstacle course as well as a hot potato game.

Weeks 5 & 6 – Animation (‘Code Fu’ Dojo Mon & Tue)

K –  2nd: Students will be using ‘ABCya- animate’ to create animations and gain a better understanding of frames, timing, and how our brains perceive animations.

3rd – 5th: Students will be creating front end video games with ‘Bloxels’ and learning to animate the different elements in the game.  They will also learn about how and why most animators work for Video Game companies.

Weeks 7 – Culmination (‘Code Fu’ Dojo Mon & Tue)

All Grades: Students will be reflecting on everything they’ve learned during the past 7 – weeks and how to apply these skills to every day life.  The final Dojos will centered around stations which will allow students to choose their favorite tool of Coding & Computer Science.
